Bachata
Learning Bachata is essential for every Salsa student & is also a great way to get your feet wet in the world of Latin dance. Students find that they progress at a faster rate then they thought they would. This beautiful dance comes to us from the Dominican Republic & here in the US, there are essentially two different styles of Bachata:
Bachata Tradicional or Dominican style Bachata– Uses lots of fun footwork & musicality & is a very “grounded” dance. The music is also more “traditional” or “classic” in the sense that it uses the original instruments that were found in the Bachata music played in the mid 20th century. You might listen to Juan Bautista, Anthony Santos, or Raulin Rodriguez if you were looking to dance some Traditional Bachata.
Bachata Urbana/Sensual Bachata-AKA modern Bachata was really developed here in the US & in Europe & focuses less on the footwork of traditional Bachata & more on spins, patterns, body rolls & arm styling. As far as the music is concerned, Romeo Santos, Prince Royce, and Adventura are familiar names in the Urban Bachata scene.
WHAT DO WE TEACH ?? The answer to that is, we teach a mixture of both!!!! Our teachers have studied & love both styles!! The foundation for both styles is relatively similar & we find that our students can have more fun in the clubs & become more adverse dancers if they get exposure to both styles. We allow our students to gravitate towards which ever style fits their personal tastes on their own.

Cumbia

Originally a courtship dance from Colombia that has very little similarity to the dance found in the clubs today. in the 40’s it traveled from Columbia to Mexico City where many changes occured to the dance & music, which gave it the feel that it currently has today. This dance is extremely popular in our area and can be found playing side by side with salsa & Bachata. This class is on a rotational schedule, please check calendar for the next opportunity.
Kizomba
No classes currently scheduled
Kizomba is an African rhythm, developed in Angola in the late 20th century. Being born in a continent with a effervescent musical history, Kizomba is a result of an evolution: young generations, listening to traditional music like Semba, felt something was missing – a modern and sensual touch. Adding an electronic percussion with a slow and sensual rhythm… kizomba was born.
During the passing years kizomba has developed and spread worldwide as a music that catches your ear and a dance that catches your soul. Many other related sounds and dancing patterns have been developing at the same time, not only in Angola but also Cape Verde and Antilles among others.
The basic make up of Kizomba is easy enough for beginners to learn, but the dance as a whole is challenging enough to keep advanced dancers learning for years. Salsa Con Rumba brought Kizomba to Eastern Washington back in 2013. After studying with many instructors in the US, Portugal, and the UK, we brought Iris de Brito, to help us launch our Kizomba classes here in TC.
